A 1930s home, a bold vision, and one of the sweetest client wins I’ve had in years – this story captures what lights me up most as an exterior designer. I love uncovering the heart of a home, especially when the people who live there are ready for something that feels true, personal, and full of character.

An Exterior Design Approach that Reveals Your Home’s True Character

These clients reached out after feeling a little let down by a local designer who hadn’t quite offered the direction they hoped for. Hearing that always makes me sad, but it also gives me energy. Because I know how exciting it is to peel back layers – in this case literal layers of old siding – and reveal what a home is meant to be.

Right away, I spotted something big: their house wasn’t the ranch style they thought it was. Under everything, it had the shape and soul of a cottage.

Once they saw it too, the ideas started flowing. They wanted bold color, something that matched the warmth they’d created inside, and details that honored the original masonry and the history of their town. As an exterior designer, moments like that are magic—the moment people see their home in a new way.

Their goals were clear: new stucco siding, a color story that felt alive, touches that connected the past to the future, and a look that felt like the interior they’d already renovated.

After several rounds of updated renderings, they felt energized and confident.

a gif slideshow show the before and after of a 30s cottage exterior; the after has red stucco and white trim with modern vertical steel siding as an accent around the entry door.

Before: dated siding, a fading window trim color on some but not all of the surfaces, and a general lack of personality

After: Bold, vibrant, warm, and it feels just like them.

This testimonial they sent after we finished the project was wonderful:

“If you want a condensed, efficient process to get a design that makes you excited and captures your imagination, hire Mel.“

Seeing the finished home during the holidays, glowing with color and warmth, was the best gift. It felt like everything we imagined came to life.

If you’re curious about new ways to bring your home’s personality forward, I’d love to help you explore what’s possible. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh set of eyes and the right ideas to make everything fall into place.

I'm Mel, and I created this just for you.

When I first told my husband we were going to spend money on design, I could feel his stomach drop. I said, look, babe- we are about to spend a lot of money on re-doing our home. Lets spend just a little bit more money on the front end so that we don't have to spend more money later re-doing something or not loving what we chose. After showing him Mel's before & after pictures, he immediately agreed with my recommendation. We knew our house had potential, and Mel laid out a beautiful plan to execute. I cannot wait to get started now!

Real RESULTS

Mel is a gifted designer and communicator. She was able to articulate her reasoning that helped us to see exactly what and why she came up her plans while being kind and affirming. And Mel has already saved us time, money, and conflict. Her design plans are not only beautiful, but they are practical. When we have done other projects, it has been difficult and even unclear to us what we want and how to communicate it to our contractors. Not this time!

"Mel has already saved us time, money, and conflict."

I knew our house needed updating but I didn't know how to achieve it or where to begin. Mel was able to quickly identify opportunities for making big improvements within our budget. She understood our special issues and helped us understand them too. Before the consultation I felt so overwhelmed and hopeless. After the consultation I now feel excited and hopeful that we can achieve a style that fits our desires and our budget. It was such a relief, and exciting, too!

"Mel was so insightful, so thoughtful, and so informative."

Real RESULTS

Mel is extremely well-rounded in design, a solid planner and communicator and someone who keeps her promises most importantly. It is not common in today's world for people to do what they say they will do. Mel delivered on all timelines and her commitment to our project was felt at every turn. It's a design partnership, with open dialogue and mutual feedback and was very satisfying.

"The entire experience was exceptional."
