A 1930s home, a bold vision, and one of the sweetest client wins I’ve had in years – this story captures what lights me up most as an exterior designer. I love uncovering the heart of a home, especially when the people who live there are ready for something that feels true, personal, and full of character.

An Exterior Design Approach that Reveals Your Home’s True Character

These clients reached out after feeling a little let down by a local designer who hadn’t quite offered the direction they hoped for. Hearing that always makes me sad, but it also gives me energy. Because I know how exciting it is to peel back layers – in this case literal layers of old siding – and reveal what a home is meant to be.

Right away, I spotted something big: their house wasn’t the ranch style they thought it was. Under everything, it had the shape and soul of a cottage.

Once they saw it too, the ideas started flowing. They wanted bold color, something that matched the warmth they’d created inside, and details that honored the original masonry and the history of their town. As an exterior designer, moments like that are magic—the moment people see their home in a new way.

Their goals were clear: new stucco siding, a color story that felt alive, touches that connected the past to the future, and a look that felt like the interior they’d already renovated.

After several rounds of updated renderings, they felt energized and confident.

a gif slideshow show the before and after of a 30s cottage exterior; the after has red stucco and white trim with modern vertical steel siding as an accent around the entry door.

Before: dated siding, a fading window trim color on some but not all of the surfaces, and a general lack of personality

After: Bold, vibrant, warm, and it feels just like them.

This testimonial they sent after we finished the project was wonderful:

“If you want a condensed, efficient process to get a design that makes you excited and captures your imagination, hire Mel.“

Seeing the finished home during the holidays, glowing with color and warmth, was the best gift. It felt like everything we imagined came to life.

If you’re curious about new ways to bring your home’s personality forward, I’d love to help you explore what’s possible. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh set of eyes and the right ideas to make everything fall into place.
